UK Innovation Corridor October events

Inside Stories

Monday 14 September 2020

With our 2020 series of events, we aim to both show how the Corridor is uniquely equipped to rise to today's challenges, and to help it, and the UK economy, develop and recover lost ground.

We are holding three, free, online events in the first week of October, as part of Real Estate Live UK.

The Productive Valley - Webinar. October 6, 11am - 12 midday

The Upper Lee Valley is London’s productive Valley. It is London’s largest contiguous industrial space, in total larger than Park Royal in north-west London. But it is, like Park Royal, fragmented with parts of it set across several London boroughs and, indeed, beyond the M25 to Broxbourne in Hertfordshire.

It is a significant opportunity - and one where the boroughs and the Greater London Authority are working together to develop a a joint narrative, identify a shared approach to skills, support and build on the Productive Valley Investment Fund, create a positive approach to shared sub-regional infrastructure requirements and social and environmental challenges, and build on the importance of advanced logistics and observed resurgence of manufacturing in sectors such as fashion and food.

Blended Cities - Webinar. October 7, 11am - 12 midday

This year has been one of upheaval – and it has changed our outlook on life, work, and leisure, and on how we move between those parts of our lives.

Do the changes in the housing, labour, and transport markets – heading towards a more blended city – offer a new set of opportunities for the places in the UK Innovation Corridor. Can there be a new mix of functions and activity in places like Harlow and Stevenage as increased digitisation, particularly in advanced technology sectors, blurs housing markets now people don’t have to travel to work every day. Could there be a hybrid model in which we can find a new paradigm for our towns and cities?

Speakers: Prof. Greg Clark, Global advisor on future cities; Tom Holbrook, 5th Studio; Monika Jain, TfL.

Placemaking for Innovation - Webinar. October 8, 2pm - 3pm

As we continue our work on identifying the critical success factors for the design and operation of places founded on innovation - where companies and organisations with innovation at the core of their activity can thrive - we will present our findings so far. What are the tools and key actions necessary to create places where innovation can thrive?

We will take a closer look at one, the curation and maintenance of an "innovation ecosystem" - the network of thriving companies which in part encourages and nurtures itself, helping the whole grow. What can we learn from established successful places, and how can those working towards it steer their path to success.

Speakers: Sally Ann Forsyth, Chief Executive Officer, Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst; John McGill, UK Innovation Corridor
