25 years ago today, the first draft of the human genome was announced, fundamentally changing the course of scientific history.
The Sanger Institute, which is based in the UK Innovation Corridor, played a vital role in the Human Genome Project, contributing almost a third of the sequence. Since then, the institute continues to be at the forefront of genomics, with new initiatives helping to transform disease tracking and tackle global outbreaks, and others focused on personalised medicine approaches for conditions like cancer, sepsis, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease
The UK Innovation Corridor is proud to host the Wellcome Sanger Institute and the vital work it does. We welcome the recent planning approval for the expansion of the Wellcome Genome Campus in South Cambridgeshire, which will provide more than 20,000 sqm of space for scientific research.
Join us in celebrating this remarkable 25-year milestone, and the Wellcome Sanger Institute’s continued pioneering work. You can find out more by viewing the institute’s blog by clicking here.
