The University of Cambridge spin-out will use its Alchemite™ deep-learning algorithm to model COVID-19 data and improve pandemic management.

Intellegens’ mission is to accelerate innovation by extracting valuable information from existing data using deep learning solutions. Their technique was conceived at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory and developed into a commercial product called Alchemite, which can produce accurate models from incomplete, fragmented and noisy datasets.

The company has now been awarded funding from Innovate UK to create a tool to model worldwide COVID-19 data so that future pandemics can be better managed. Alchemite will be used to build an interactive, predictive tool that will allow governments, healthcare providers and companies to forecast the progression of pandemics. Users will be able to change the parameters of the model to understand how policy options might impact outcomes.

The tool will be trained using data from online repositories and organisations around the world, including the NHS, European Centre for Disease Prevention, and World Health Organisation. Once complete, Intellegens will work with the Richard Nixon Foundation in the USA to roll the technology out as a public policy tool.

Because Alchemite can unravel data problems that aren’t accessible to traditional deep learning techniques, it has already demonstrated its worth during the COVID-19 crisis by helping scientists to conduct virtual experiments that would otherwise have been delayed due to the closure of laboratories.
